Pertagas Commitment >Health, Safety & The Environment
Health, Safety & The Environment
Proper implementation of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) aspects is a requirement for a world class company. For Pertamina Gas, its strong commitment to good HSE implementation is realized by the support of every business unit in instilling HSE as a part of the workplace culture in every operational activity. In order to achieve HSE Operating Excellence, parent company PT Pertamina (Persero) issued an HSE policy with the aim of implementing a HSE management system integrated with the company’s safe, reliable, efficient and environmentally sound operations. This policy encourages all line managers as well as all employees to do their utmost to:
  1. Make Safety, Health and Environmental Protection the top priority.
  2. Identify any potential dangers and minimize the risks in order to prevent incidents.
  3. Use the best technology to reduce the operational impacts on people, assets and the environment.
  4. Appraise employees’ Safety, Health and Environmental Protection performance as part of the evaluation system and reward them accordingly.
  5. Increase employees’ awareness and competencies so that they carry out their duties properly and safely.
  6. Create and maintain a harmonious relationship with all stakeholders living around the operating areas to foster a mutually beneficial partnership.
We realize that every business activity, especially in the energy sector, has the potential to create dangerous impacts and risks to the workforce, assets and the environment. Measures are continuously undertaken to minimize these risks. The company also actively informs all its workers and employees about HSE principles in order to make them pay more attention to HSE aspects.

Among the ways this is realized is through Management Walkthroughs involving the BOD, the HSE division and line mangers at the subsidiary employee level. There were also safety meetings.

Besides this, the Pertamina Gas HSE division drew up Work Systems (STK) including: HSE Management Guidelines, PEKA Guidelines, Equipment Acceptance Organizational Work Plan (TKO), Certification/Re-certification of Equipment/Installation TKO, Pipeline Flow Inspection on Land TKI, classification Inspection TKI, Pressure Vessel Inspection TKI, and Safety Valve Inspection TKI.

Certification as well as re-certification of equipment and installations was carried out throughout 2009 in the Western Java Area, the Northern Sumatra Area, the Southern Sumatra Area and Kalimantan.

In support of Pertamina Gas in 2009, environmental studies were carried out, comprising: Report on Monitoring of the Western Java Area Environ-mental Management Plan (PKL) and RPL (Location Land Usage Plan), Pondok Tengah – Tegalgede Gas Transmission Section Environmental Management Effort & Environmental Monitoring Effort (UKL & UPL), Gas Transmission Plan for Gas from the South Sembakung to Bunyu Methanol Refinery Environmental Impact Study, which is under-way at the Environment Ministry.

All these endeavors produced good results, one of them being that there were no accidents in 2009, meaning a zero Number of Accidents (NOA) figure. Besides this Pertamina Gas also won a number of environmental and workplace health and safety awards, including:

Corporate Health, Safety and Environmental Awards:
  1. Western Java Area: Patra Adikriya Bhumi Pratama (Bronze).
  2. Eastern Java Area: Patra Adikriya Bhumi Madya (Silver).
Environmental Awards

The Implementation of Corporate Performance Assessment Program in Environmental Management (PROPER-LH) has become the instrument to assess corporate performance in environmental management. This is in line with Environment Minister Decision No. 128/MENLH/2008, which made it mandatory for Oil & Gas and Manufacturing activities. As proof of the company’s commitment to the environment, Pertamina Gas received the followed PROPER awards in the 2008-2009 period:

Blue PROPER, for:
  1. Western Java Area.
  2. Eastern Java Area.
